It can be affected by different factors and in different dimensions and nonadherence can lead to complications. The patient’s hypertension knowledge is one of these factors, so this monograph aims to understand the influence of the patient’s hypertension knowledge in medication adherence.Methods: A study was developed in community pharmacies, in which all patients presenting a prescription for at least one antihypertension drug or taking antihypertension drugs for more than 3 months were invited to participate. During the interview with the patient, sociodemografic and therapy related data were collected, and the Hypertension Knowledge Test (HKT), Beliefs about Medicines Questionnaire (BMQ) and Maastricht Utrecht Adherence in Hypertension (MUAH) questionnaires were administered.Results: 197 patients were enrolled in the study with a mean age of 65.82±12.15 years. The mean score of HKT was 16.98±2.67 and the mean score of MUAH was 127.84±17.44, having been identified a significant statistical correlation (r = 0,283; p < 0.001) between both scores. There were also identified significant correlations between HKT and the different dimensions of MUAH: dimension I presented a positive correlation (r = 0,174; p = 0,014) with HKT; dimensions II and III presented negative correlations (r = -0,267; p < 0.001 e r = -0,186; p = 0,009, respectively) with HKT; dimension IV did not presented any significant statistical correlation with HKT.Conclusions: With this study, it is possible to conclude that the patient’s knowledge on hypertension has an impact on the level of medication adherence. Studying the relations between the different dimensions of MUAH and the patient’s knowledge allows to understand the mistakes to correct and to improve the different components that influence medication adherence.Introdução: A adesão à terapêutica tem grande influência no sucesso do tratamento de doenças como a hipertensão. Pode ser afetada por diversos fatores e em diferentes dimensões e a não adesão pode levar à ocorrência de complicações para o doente. O conhecimento do doente sobre a hipertensão é um destes fatores e, por isso, esta monografia tem como objetivo conhecer a influência do conhecimento sobre a hipertensão na adesão do doente à terapêutica. Material e métodos: Foi realizado um estudo em farmácias comunitárias no qual foram convidados a participar todos os doentes que apresentassem prescrição de, pelo menos, um medicamento anti-hipertensor ou que fizessem terapêutica anti-hipertensora há mais de 3 meses. Na entrevista com o doente foram recolhidos dados sociodemográficos e relativos à terapêutica de cada doente e realizados os questionários Hypertension Knowledge Test (HKT), Beliefs about Medicines Questionnaire (BMQ) e Maastricht Utrecht Adherence in Hypertension (MUAH).Resultados: Participaram no estudo 197 doentes, com uma média de idades de 65,82±12,15 anos. A média do score do HKT foi de 16,98±2,67 e do MUAH de 127,84±17,44, tendo sido identificada uma correlação estatisticamente significativa (r = 0,283; p < 0,001) entre os scores dos dois questionários. Foi também verificada a existência de correlações entre o HKT e as diferentes dimensões do MUAH: a dimensão I apresentou uma correlação positiva (r = 0,174; p = 0,014) com o HKT; as dimensões II e III correlações negativas (r = -0,267; p < 0,001 e r = -0,186; p = 0,009, respetivamente) com o HKT; a dimensão IV não apresentou uma correlação estatisticamente significativa com o HKT.Conclusão: Através deste estudo é possível concluir que os conhecimentos do doente sobre a hipertensão têm um impacto elevado no grau de adesão à terapêutica. O estudo da relação das diferentes dimensões do MUAH com o conhecimento sobre a doença permite perceber quais as falhas a corrigir e os aspetos a melhorar nas diferentes componentes que influenciam a adesão à terapêutica
